SPM Seminer: “Globalization, Inequality and the Future of Democracy: Post-Crisis Perspectives”

7 Temmuz 2014 Pazartesi günü saat 14.30-17.00 arasında TOBB ETÜ SPM'nin düzenlediği seminerde, Koç Üniversitesi Uluslararası İlişkiler Bölümü'nden Prof Dr. Ziya Öniş “Globalization, Inequality and the Future of Democracy: Post-Crisis Perspectives” başlıklı bir seminer verdi.

Seminer konusu:

The paper probes into the prospects for democracy in both “ global north” and the “ global south” in the aftermath of the global financial crisis. The central argument is that the prospects for democracy are not very bright. At the same time, there exists, multiple and often distinct, challenges in the north and the south. In discussing the prospects for democracy in the global north and the global south, three world of capitalist democracy are identified: (a) “ north” is characterized by a combination of political inclusion and economic exclusion in the face of rising inequality (b) the Latin American variant of the “south” is characterized by a combination of political and economic inclusion and (c) the non-Latin American variants of the “ south” are characterized by a combination of political exclusion and economic inclusion. While we see the development of more socially inclusive forms of neo-liberalism, this should not detract from the fact that pervasive income and wealth inequalities remain. This is not only a problem for the future of democracy for the global north , but also a problem for the future of democracy in the global south.
